A well constructed high-quality piece of furniture can be passed down for generations as a family heirloom. Hifi record consoles like the ones we create at LUNO are built to last, our flagship console The EGB2 is made with American Walnut, and can provide years of enjoyment, but to keep it looking and sounding great you have to put in a little bit of work. We get a lot of questions about how to clean and care of these console units. These consoles just like many of their vintage mid-century modern predecessors have the potential of becoming collector’s items, so it’s a good idea to figure out how to start out on the right foot. Luckily for you, if you’re a LUNO console owner, the surface requires minimal care, but here’s our guide on how to clean and care for both new and vintage hifi record consoles.

First Tip: Use A Microfiber Cloth

No matter how durable your finish, you want to use cleaning tools that won’t scratch or mark your surface. When you’re dry dusting, a good suggestion is to always use a microfiber cloth, or at the very least a lightly damp soft cloth. Resist the urge to use a lot of force, try to use a light touch.

Tip Two: Don’t Be Shy With Those Coasters Or You’ll Get Ring Stains

If your record console has a had waxed finish, make sure you don’t place any hot or wet cups directly on the surface, or you could damage your finish. If you have a shallow spot, try rubbing it out with your finger directly on the surface, or if it’s a more substantial mark, use a few drops of household ammonia on a soft rag or microfiber cloth and rub lightly until the mark is lifted.

Tip Three: Caring For Your Wood Finish

To protect a finish like our EGB2, which is hand waxed, you can use furniture wax or a silicone-based polish on the external surface, twice a year is recommended to keep it looking great. However it’s important to note that you shouldn’t wax furniture that are finished with polyurethane varnish, the only danger here is causing a proliferation of wax buildup. If your console has an oiled finish, apply a thin layer of linseed oil once annually, rub it into the wood briskly until the oily texture absorbs into the wood.

Tip Four: Keep Your Records Clean

Luckily we make this job easy with our Groovewasher record cleaning kit, the G2 Fluid included in the kit is designed for maximum cleaning effectiveness of the delicate vinyl surface and microgroove. Anti-static action on contact, which really helps to get the record to release all of the dirt and dust on the surface to release. Also, it’s a good idea to wipe the surfaces of the record player with the included microfiber cloth after each use.

Tip Five: A Clean Record Stylus Is Important

Typically, it’s suggested to clean your record stylus or record needle as they’re more commonly called after each use. There are stylus cleaning brushes that you can use for this, or you could use a very soft paint brush. It’s important to always make sure you wipe it from back to front, if you brush it from side to side you could risk bending or breaking it.

Tip Six: Dust Is Not Your Friend

Overtime dust, rust and other buildup in your audio equipment can lead to noise and popping sounds. Keeping the surface of your amp, turntable and speakers, especially near the connections, dust free is a great practice to limit the build up that can happen in and around your audio equipment. It’s always a good idea to use an anti-static cloth, and for getting into tight areas near the tone arm, and around cables, a can of compressed air can be used to blow away debris.

This is a list of audio technology that essentially failed, or was too redundant or unnecessary that it never found an audience. When researching this blog entry, the sheer enormity of the number of now extinct audio formats that I came across was unbelievable. I think this should be prefaced by saying there are a lot of cool ideas here, and so many that I wish would have caught on for various reasons from being superior technology to just looking extremely cool. It’s amazing how many times this single area of audio formats, and their many media types were invented and reinvented, even in the wake of other new and widely adopted technologies, still companies both large and small took a shot with their own entry into the audio player technology space. In no particular order, here’s our list of audio equipment that should have never been invented.

Oakley’s Thump Sunglasses

oakley thump sunglasses

These wearable works of art, created by Oakley were endorsed by Dog The Bounty Hunter, and sold for a whopping $495 when they were first introduced. Beyond their stellar celebrity endorsement, and style that looks like it could have hoped right off of one of Wesley Snipes enemies in Blade, they had extremely limited storage when they were first released compared to the standards of mp3 players of that time. People say they were difficult to use, however they also say you have to suffer for fashion, and inconvenience is a small price to pay to look this good.

ZUNE MP3 Player

Zune Audio Equipment

Despite users who were so excited about the technology that it actually lead one man to get a Zune tattoo, these units couldn’t compete with the more ubiquitous Apple “Mp3” offerings. They actually had some cool features in which you could share music directly between Zunes, however there were some limitations, you could only play acquired tracks three times within three days of having shared them, among a few other drawbacks. They tried to reinvigorate interest with an updated HD version of the player, that included gaming, but it wasn’t long before the Zune became the first digital mp3 player to go the way of the 8-track.

Sony Mini Disc Players

Sony Mini Disc Audio Player

Despite being promoted in almost every late 90s movie about hackers or futuristic crime, they never caught on as being a popular format. Not to say they didn’t have their extremely loyal cult, who still use mini discs to this day. Some extremely obscure sub-genres of music still put out albums on this format, but price and a transformation of digital downloads with the advent of Napster had already began to change the landscape of storage capacity, and how people were listening to music. From a design standpoint this was one of the most practical updates to optical format data storage, that allowed for protection of the media with a plastic covering, based on the same data access door used on computer floppy discs.

8-Track Cassette Players

8 Track Cassette Players

8-Track players, and the associated audio equipment, were extremely cool looking, so many of the players had incredible design, however many users had various complaints about these audio players. Many would report that the unites functioning and track switching were very noisy. It was also not a very reliable format, they would frequently have issues with playback and track switching. The 8-track tape players were also most popularly installed in cars, however the tapes themselves couldn’t stand up to the extreme heat of being stored in cars, as they would warp and melt into an unplayable condition.

DataPlay Disc Players

Dataplay Disc Players

Almost an identical clone of Sony’s mini disc technology, however there were a few twists to DataPlay’s offering that was incredibly unique. As illegal downloading began to slowly dismantle the commercial music market, the DataPlay discs and players utilized a complex digital rights management system, which almost all but prevented the illegal copying or trading of tracks. It also allowed for those who have purchased a disc to pay to unlock additional content that was already recorded to the disc itself with a secondary purchase. With limited commercial releases available on the format, fans could however get their hands on Avril Lavigne’s first record and then pay to unlock multi-media and extra content. If that doesn’t give you a picture of why we aren’t using this today, then I don’t know what will.

Take a look at some audio equipment that we are very grateful for here.

Bang & Olufsen and David Lynch collaborated on a special edition speaker collection, consisting of three series of B&O speakers: Beoplay A9, M5, and P2. Each series of speakers displays imagery produced from David Lynch.

The Beoplay A9 has a minimalist design, with five speakers within, giving it a very discrete look. The David Lynch series is not so discrete. You could position one of these in a corner or hang it on a wall. As an object in your space, it could pass for a piece of art. The handcrafted, wool-blend covers makes it look as smooth as furniture. The legs come in maple, walnut, or oak.

Like a small drum, the Beoplay M5 works by tapping the top. The Beoplay M5 is even more discrete than the Beoplay A9 because it is smaller. But don’t let the size fool you. This speaker is powerful, allowing you to connect it to Apple AirPlay. It comes with its own sound optimization app, turning your cell into a remote for the speaker. You could place the Beoplay M5 all over your home and it will be barely noticeable.

For a portable experience, the Beoplay P2 gives users the chance to be closer to their music than with other speakers. It comes with a built-in, omni-directional, microphone, which means that it can be used for business meetings and conference calls. The anodized, pearl blasted aluminium grill and leather strap make it easy and convenient to carry. It can play for up to 10 hours before charging.

All three special edition series are on sale at the MoMA Design Store in New York for two more days. Come November 11, this special edition set will be all gone. Otherwise, you’ll just have to settle for the regular Beoplay A9, M5, and P2 series, and they aren’t bad either.

Thought record consoles were dead? Nope, they never died. In fact, we at LUNO are one of the few companies in the world that make modern record consoles, and people love them.

Thought typewriters were dead? Well they might have been for a while, but they’re back now in the form of modern typewriters.

Companies such as Vinpok and KnewKey, that specialize in creative 3C accessories (computer, communication, and consumer electronics) for iPhones and MacBooks, make retro dual mode mechanical keyboard that have a classic look. They are inspired by the vintage design of typewriters, and gives creatives, particularly writers, the thrill of using an analog writing tool. It provides a retro writing experience that does not compare to using a laptop or the keyboard of a desktop computer. Theses battery powered modern typewriters can work for 50 hours on a single charge. Both Windows and Mac OS operating systems are supported by these modern typewriters, can connect to your phone via Bluetooth, and connect to your laptop via a USB cord. There is a clip stand where paper would be inserted to receive a tablet or smartphone, and dynamic backlit keys (with 5 levels of brightness) that make small clicking sounds to give you that working on an old typewriter feel. There’s even a scroll knob, not for paper of course, but to adjust your clipped-in device. The carriage return bar is used to switch between USB and Bluetooth modes.

Unlike the typewriters of old that were very heavy because of their printing mechanisms, these modern typewriters are lightweight and portable. You can easily move them around the room, and take them with you on the go, just like a laptop or a tablet.

We love seeing how the desire for analog products like vinyl albums and record consoles also exists with writing tools.

With so much focus on the rise and convenience of streaming music, and the desire for the true sound and analog experience of vinyl, CD lovers must be feeling left out in the cold. They are like the middle child in a family of three siblings: Without the parental expectations of the older sibling, but definitely unspoiled like the younger sibling.

In that analogy, the youngest sibling is obviously the person obsessed with streaming music. They have no idea how good they have it. They just have to search for a genre, an artist, or a song, and within a blink of an eye they have what they’re looking for. Plus, each song plays into the next, meaning they don’t have to get up if they don’t want to. Spoiled, spoiled, spoiled.

Now the oldest sibling in that analogy is definitely the vinyl lover. They had it tough, having to leave the house to go to a record store, and spend hours flicking through albums to find a gem of a record or maybe something obscure. They have an appreciation for the artwork and craft of each album, and the pure sound is worth it.

The CD lover occupies a strange no-mans land between the two: enjoying something old enough to not be cool, but not too old to be obsolete!

Rotel

And yet, it’s tough to find anyone who doesn’t have any CDs anymore, even people with extensive vinyl collections or a seemingly unlimited number of digital files. Everybody has at least one CD. Some have over a hundred.

This is why last month, Rotel launched Rotel 14 Series, the A11 stereo amplifier and CD11 player. Capable of supporting both digital and analog sources, this versatile system has a Bluetooth receiver for wireless audio streaming for Android and Apple users.

Typically, the sibling with the most wisdom is the oldest (sorry, it’s true).

Show your wisdom, by playing your vinyls on a high-end system.

Exclusivity is valuable. To have something of high quality that nobody else around you has, which only you have access to. Or to have something so rare, that you instantly become the center of attention. To get such a status symbol is a way to really show off your wealth and confidence. So when you hear that people have integrated recording studios within moving vehicles and yacht, it’s obvious that those are definite status symbols.

Check out 3 mobile recording studios and the exclusivity they provide:

Container Studios

For those of you who have multiple properties, you might want to consider investing in a transportable home recording studio from an Australian company called Container Studios for about $65,000 USD. Watch the video below:

Rolls-Royce Phantom

Back in the day, it was customary to see rappers with luxury cars in the background. But what about seeing a car with a luxury recording studio inside? Watch British rapper-record producer Skepta use a new Rolls-Royce Phantom as a recording studio. Yes, he recorded a song inside of a luxury car!

Octopus Luxury Yacht

Most people would expect to see a bar on a luxury yacht, maybe even a gym. But how many people have ever seen a recording studio on a luxury yacht? The answer is, not many. The recording studio on the Octopus Luxury Yacht has as many features as in a home luxury studio, along with acoustical instruments, such as guitars and a Steinway grand piano.

At the very least, you have to appreciate the imagination of these examples. Few things say cool like a recording studio in a place you’d never expect. If someone dares to install one on a private jet we’ll let you know.

Even with all the new technology available on the market, there’s something about the design of older technology that is charming.

No frills? No worries.

Simple design? That’s ok.

People just love the look, feel, and use of these technologies. You’ll hear people say, they don’t make things like they used to anymore, but is that really true? Well, yes and no. Yes, things aren’t made exactly like they used to, but technology of today has made older products seem new again. LUNO wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the appeal of vinyl records and modern consoles.

Lofree’s Poison Speaker is an example of how a product can have a simple design and still be charming. The speaker gives off a high quality sound with an analog feel inspired by the design of 1950s radios. Its smooth contours would look good on your desk at work, on your bedside table, or on a console in your hallway. The only difference is that the Poison Speaker is wireless, and according to Lofree, strikes “the perfect balance between retro aesthetics and modern tech.”

speakers

The speaker is so small that it fits in your hands, at 3.5 inches tall and 2.5 inches deep. It comes with a built-in lithium battery that will give you a charging time of 4 to 6 hours. There’s also a built-in FM radio that comes with a classic dial. If you want to connect the Poison to your computer or TV, there is a aux cable included in the box.

So see, they do make things the way they used to, only now they make them to be more convenient. The Poison Speakers is just one more example that it doesn’t take a fancy design to make a product attractive. Just a simple design with a classic look can be appealing to consumers.

If you’ve ever shopped for speakers for your home you know that there are many products on the market, but not all of them give you the quality that you’re looking for. But the best way to know if a product is worth your time and your money is to look for something that the pros like. The Shinola’s Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers give you the sound quality that people who work in the music industry have come to expect, except you can now experience it in your home. For audiophiles, these speakers are simply designed and their sweet sound is backed by custom 6.5-inch high-excursion alloy surround woofers, and 1-inch high-efficiency soft dome tweeters.

Bookshelf Speakers

Bookshelf Speakers

According to Shinola, the made in America speakers are “built to play your music the way you like it,” from an Oak composite cabinet with a hand finished surface that owners of some of our record consoles will surely appreciate.  Shinola partnered with Barefoot Sound. who are leaders in professional audio recording monitors. Some of Barefoot Sound’s products can be found in the luxury recording studios of many of the music industry’s top producers and artists due to their high-powered amplifiers.

Typically, Shinola collaborates with American manufacturers to produce high quality products. They make luxury watches, jewelry, bags, bicycles, and other products. When they collaborated with Barefoot Sound for the Bookshelf Speakers, they wanted to make an audio product that could be hardwired to third party systems, such as turntables, record consoles, Blu-ray players, and smartphones.

Although the word “bookshelf” is in the name of these speakers, they obviously don’t need to be put there. Their elegant, modern design means that they could fit almost anywhere in your home.

You may not realize it, but it doesn’t matter if you play your music on a CD player or spin records on a turntable – your sound could be better. When you turn up the volume on that system, some of that sound quality is lost due to vibration. Is there a way to make sure that you’re playing music only for yourself and those who want to hear it, and not your next door neighbor?

sound quality

Critical Mass Systems designs high-performance vibration reducing systems for high-end audio. It’s not that their systems make the vibrations disappear, but rather they control the vibrations so that it goes to where it is less likely to interfere with the sound quality. They originally made these vibration damping systems for turntables, which tend to be the most vibration-sensitive component of any audio system due to the spinning of the record.

By developing a proprietary internal vibration filtering rack, Critical Mass Systems’ products reduce structure-borne sound and reduce vibration of the overall audio system. These racks look like normal racks, but are sophisticated thermodynamic systems, framed with aluminum alloy. This system is so effective that it has received a long list of positive reviews from people in the music and audio industry.

You want the sound coming from the speakers to be as perfect as possible, and this is what these audio racks do. They help to provide a more honest sound by reducing the vibrations from the speakers and the overall rack. They enhance the real sound of the music, as it was meant to be heard.

sound quality

Think of all the parties and functions that you have been to where the music just seemed to vibrate through falls, floors, and could be heard even a hundred feet away from the source. All of that “lost” sound that was allowed to vibrate away could have been retained and controlled so that the people who were really meant to hear it could enjoy the music in its fullest form.

Critical Mass Systems offers “Swiss-like precision; German-like engineering; Italianate luxury; “ and American-made craftsmanship.

As someone who cares about sound quality,

you’ll love our HiFi record consoles.
