You don’t want there to be too much light because that can change the texture of the wrappers and to rolled cigars. Some of Cigar Time’s custom-built humidors are between 129 to 188 square-feet.

Walk-in humidors also come with systems to regulate the temperature and relative humidity. This ensures that the leaves remain soft, and the natural process of fermentation remains uninterrupted. (The ideal temperatures for cigars are between 68°F and 71°F, with a relative humidity of between 65 and 68%).

The choices of thermal systems include:

1 – Cooling System, which accurately sustains a stable measure of temperature and humidity;

2 – Dynamic System, which uses a filter saturated with distilled water, with no impurities, to sustain appropriate humidity levels;

3 – Passive System, which uses a sponge moistened with distilled water that slowly evaporates, to keep the flavor of your cigars pure of foreign bacteria.

To give you a better idea, here is a brief overview of how your favorite cigars are made:

1 – Cultivation:

Tobacco seeds are planted indoors, and the plants allowed to grow in a controlled environment for about two months. The plants are carefully taken care of for six to eight months until they are ready for harvest.

2 – Curing:

For the tobacco to have a unique scent, the leaves from the plants must be cured indoors under a sustained temperature. The tobacco leaves are fixed to pieces of wood and hung from the ceiling, until they break down, turning from green to brown.

3 – Fermentation:

Each leaf is categorized based on size, color, and integrity. Workers sort them and set each aside for appropriate parts of the cigar. The leaves are then bundled and kept indoors for a period of three to five years. During this time, the leaves continue to change, and their taste becomes more refined.

4 – Stripping:

The main stem of each leave is removed, and the leaves are bundled for fermentation again.

5 – Rolling:

The smallest leaves are used for the cigar fillers, while the larger leaves are used for the inner and outer wrappers. Cigars can be hand rolled or passed through a rolling machine. Afterwards, the cigars are inspected for consistency and quality assurance.

6 – Packaging:

Bands are placed around each cigar, and then categorized by various shades. Each set of shades becomes a box of cigars.

This is a special year for the festival, because they will also be celebrating Havana’s 500^th anniversary. The festival will also celebrate the anniversaries of a couple cigar brands, with special galas for the 20^th anniversary of San Cristóbal de La Habana and the 50the anniversary of Trinidad.

The business of cigars plays a large role in the Habanos Festival. For example, companies such as Habanos S.A. have 27 brands of cigars which they sell throughout the world, but most of their sales are in Spain, China, France, Germany, and of course Cuba. The U.S. only accounts for 18% of their sales. In 2018, Habanos S.A sold 450 million Premium cigars worldwide. At the Habanos Festival, expect the presentation of new and exclusive cigars, like Cohiba’s new exclusive production of Novedosos which will be distributed by La Casa del Habano.

Now the Habanos Festival is not all about business. There will be great Cuban cuisine with musical performances from la Orquesta Aragón De Cuba, Toques del Río, and Buena Fe. There will also be an auction, seminars, along with speeches by tobacco industry experts like Miguel Bárzaga and Dr. Rogelio Garrido de la Grana. Beyond the Palacio de Convenciones (Convention Center), the festival has arranged visits to the La Corona and Laguito factories, and plantations tours in the Vuelta Abajo region in Pinar del Río where you can meet the workers who gather the tobacco.  Near the end, there will be an award ceremony for the best cigar brands.

Plasencia’s first premium cigar that wasn’t produced for someone else was Alma Fuerte in 2016. It is 5 inches long with a ring gauge of 52. When it was reviewed by 4 judges without any bands or wrappers, people were impressed. “The aroma on this sample is fairly mild but has notes of spice and sweet wood,” said one judge. Another judge said that it smelled like pepper and spices from India and the Middle East. “Coffee and chocolate combined with it to provide a well balanced mix,” said another judge. In the end, the impression was that Alma Fuerte was “just plain delicious. “

Now in their fifth generation, the family’s new Plasencia Cigars brand now has a series of their own cigars, including Alma Fuerte.
