Luxury home recording studios are one of those amenities that is sure to catch the right person’s attention.  If you’re a musician, an entertainer, a sound engineer, or a person of influence in the music industry, it is very likely that the decision to purchase a home or not will boil down to one thing: Does the home have a recording studio? For many who have that amenity high on their luxury real estate wish list, having a home studio can be a rewarding experience. But what if you’re just a music connoisseur who doesn’t work in the industry, but has the disposable income to build a recording studio in your own home? We know people like you exist. People who, even when it comes to hobbies, it’s go big or go home. So before we show you 38 luxury home recording studios, let us give you some information to help you determine if getting a home studio built is even worth it for those who don’t produce music professionally.

How Much Does A Luxury Home Recording Studio Cost?

Honestly, it depends on what you want your home studio to include. A fully equipped, high-end, recording studio in your home with computers, an interface, microphones, soundboards, synthesizers, recording/processing software, and acoustic foam for the walls, will cost between $20,000 and $50,000. If you want a truly professional grade recording studio, where various artists and producers will be coming by to work with, they can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and even up to a million. Then there is the cost of buying musical instruments. The cost also depends on what you will be doing in the studio. If you’re only recording acoustical guitars and vocals, then you won’t need plenty of outputs and inputs. With the help of companies like PreSonus, you’ll have an idea of what you might need in terms of software and equipment.

How To Build A Professional Recording Studio?

No matter the room you choose, you may have to get it retrofitted so that it can be acoustically sound. Again, if you plan on inviting musical artists to use your home recording studio, then you only want the best equipment, software, instruments, and high-end furniture in that space. Building a studio by yourself might not be the best solution, but if you’re feeling adventurous, here is an informative blog post from Produce Like A Pro that shows you how. There’s also E-Home Recording Studio that is worth a look. But suppose you’re not that adventurous or confident in your own technical, design, and construction skills, and there’s no shame in admitting it, we suggest getting a professional studio designer to do it. Next up in this post, we’ll tackle the question about finding designers, but first:

Home Recording Studio Design

Whether you are in America or elsewhere, there are a few companies that are exceptional at building recording studios, for both homes and commercial uses. Sometimes they are called “architectural acoustic design firms.” There is Studio 440 and Steven Klein in Los Angeles, FM Design in Mahopac, NY,  AKA Design in London, Pilchner Schoustal International in Toronto, and many others.

Now before you take the step and build a luxury home recording studio, it’s best to consider the resale attractiveness of your home.

W Hotels is expanding their connection to the music industry with their very own label called W Records. Over the next year, four emerging artists will record albums and W Records will help them developed into stars.

W Records is another tool that the luxury hotel brand is using to attract clients. Beyond having a library of vinyl records for guests to choose from, W Hotels are taking their knowledge of music and supporting the careers of artists. They plan on helping artists record, mix, master, produce videos, and even with distribution. The music from this new label will be produced at W Sound Suites, the hotel’s recording studios located in Los Angeles, Seattle, Barcelona, and Bali. Along with digital albums, W Records will produce 500 limited-edition vinyl copies of exclusive tracks. Each artist will have the chance to perform at the hotel brand’s W Wake Up Call music festivals. What this means for these emerging artists is exposure to the 110 million members of Marriott, the W Hotel’s parent company.

As Anthony Ingham, the Global Brand Leader for W Hotels Worldwide, said in a press release in April of 2017, “The W brand has long been synonymous with music, from the live music programming in our buzzing Living Rooms to musicians choosing to stay with us while on tour.  The W Sound Suite provides the perfect professional environment for when inspiration strikes – any time, day or night, complemented by 24 hour room service, of course!”

W Hotels are doing two things: They are creating another point of contact between the brand and their members by using an existing affinity for music. This deepens the relationship between the brand and their guests, making the bond stronger. W are also strengthening their relationship to the music industry, by becoming part of it in a big way. Currently, they have music directors who are great at finding new and innovative music to play in their hotels. But with W Records, they will not only find new artists, but help emerging artists get their start. None of this is new for W Hotels, who have created an ecosystem of verticals for their global community of design savvy individuals. This new holistic approach is what these emerging artists will benefit from.

“W Records is, undoubtedly, a natural next step for W and music. It represents a complete 360-degree approach to our innovative music programming – one in which we support emerging talent, provide them a place to record, distribute their music and act as a live venue. We’ve accomplished each of these tasks in increments before, but now we can do it all.”

The first artist that W Records is launching is Amber Mark, an R&B singer whose first two tracks will be available on 500 limited-edition vinyl copies. Check out some of the photos below of the W Sound Suites in Bali and Seattle, as well as the launch of W Records earlier this month in New York when Amber Mark performed.

The Frank Zappa Estate is a window into the thinking of a music legend. Back in August 2016, the 7,000 square-foot, 1930s Tudor-like, Hollywood Hills estate, was sold for $5.25 million USD after being on the market for only about two months. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumous inductee (1995) bought the property for $74,000 in the 1960’s. The property has seven bedrooms, including a master suite with a fireplace, six bathrooms, several guestrooms, a library, a formal dining room, a kitchen with cathedral ceilings, a rooftop tennis court, a formal dining room, a large backyard swimming pool and spa, a stone courtyard, two guest cottages, one guest apartment, and a climate-controlled private vault in the basement where Zappa kept personal archives of recordings. It’s far from a tiny house!

Within this house is Zappa’s luxury home recording studio called “Utility Muffin Research Kitchen.” As an experimental rock artist, Zappa composed most of his music here, creating complex merges of classical music, blues, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll. Most of Zappa’s 60 albums were composed at his estate, with 40 more albums released after his death in 1993.

From the décor of the house, it is a place of many peculiar charms. You can see Zappa’s unconventional, individualistic style all over the place. There are quirky elements like submarine doors, ornaments on interior door frames, a tub with a blue exterior, handrails with branch-like balusters, images of snakes on walls, colorful abstract shapes superimposed on herringbone flooring, and mermaid caryatids on dining room door frames. Basically, a mix and blend of styles just like his music. That is why the house is similar to a 1930s Tudor, but not quite.

Oh, and who bought the Frank Zappa Estate for $5.25 million USD? None other than the experimental, non-conformist pop superstar, Lady Gaga.

Watch the video tour of the estate below, followed by several photos, and then finally watch Zappa’s comical, 1989 CBS interview, and but first:

Exclusivity is valuable. To have something of high quality that nobody else around you has, which only you have access to. Or to have something so rare, that you instantly become the center of attention. To get such a status symbol is a way to really show off your wealth and confidence. So when you hear that people have integrated recording studios within moving vehicles and yacht, it’s obvious that those are definite status symbols.

Check out 3 mobile recording studios and the exclusivity they provide:

Container Studios

For those of you who have multiple properties, you might want to consider investing in a transportable home recording studio from an Australian company called Container Studios for about $65,000 USD. Watch the video below:

Rolls-Royce Phantom

Back in the day, it was customary to see rappers with luxury cars in the background. But what about seeing a car with a luxury recording studio inside? Watch British rapper-record producer Skepta use a new Rolls-Royce Phantom as a recording studio. Yes, he recorded a song inside of a luxury car!

Octopus Luxury Yacht

Most people would expect to see a bar on a luxury yacht, maybe even a gym. But how many people have ever seen a recording studio on a luxury yacht? The answer is, not many. The recording studio on the Octopus Luxury Yacht has as many features as in a home luxury studio, along with acoustical instruments, such as guitars and a Steinway grand piano.

At the very least, you have to appreciate the imagination of these examples. Few things say cool like a recording studio in a place you’d never expect. If someone dares to install one on a private jet we’ll let you know.

Recording studios are places where artists create the sort of magic that can move the world. Many times, artists go to professional studios to create, but some artists are fortunate to have their own recording studios. Some of these studios can be very luxurious, as we have seen before. There is an element of comfort which these stars get from their own studio. They feel like their best creations can happen there, and seem very happy in their environment. And you can see it on their faces. Even though they are hard at work they look like they’re having fun.  Which is why when you listen to some of their music you can feel the emotions within the music, because it’s coming from something deep.

We thought that it would be fun to show you 4 celebrities giving a tour of their recording studios. For each star, notice how happy they seem.

Charlie Puth

The Billboard Hot 100 singer-record producer’s recording studio in his L.A. home is decorated with lamps, candles, and framed copies of his own vinyl record.

Recording Studios

Lil Jon

In 2017, rapper-record producer, Lil Jon, partnered with a reality TV show, to build a 480 square-foot recording studio with a tiny guesthouse in the backyard of his mansion in suburban Atlanta, all for $120,000. Here’s a short video:

Recording Studios

Hans Zimmer

Zimmer is the man behind the soundtrack of some of big name movies, including Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Dark Knight.

Recording Studios

Dr.Dre

The hip hop legend has a massive studio in the basement of his Brentwood, California home. The short video below is of him giving a tour of the studio under construction (No pictures, sorry, but Dre sounded super hype in the video though).

Last month, the iconic guitar company Gibson posted a 4-part interview series with Eddie Kramer, the legendary producer and engineer who had a hell of a lot of stories to tell. Kramer has collaborated with the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Carlos Santana, Kiss, David Bowie, and other big stars.

There was one interview a week, with a moderator from Gibson asking Kramer questions about how these stars they worked, put their songs together, recorded, performed, and handled their craft. Kramer talks about how these big stars found inspiration in the studio and what they used to motivate them. The series is an inside look at the world of Rock and Roll from a man who has recorded some of the greatest music of the last 60 years.

You’ll really appreciate how these artists thought about their music. Even though Kramer’s stories are what he observed from working with these stars, you’ll become a little more familiar with how they did their thing. You know the names, songs, albums, concerts, and posters, but Kramer tells us about the nuts and bolts of how they made their magic. There’s sure to be things that Eddie talks about that you never knew about your favorite artists, no matter how big of a fan you are.

Each interview was around 50-minutes in length, starting with a discussion with the moderator, and mixed with questions from viewers in the chat. Check out all four interviews of Ask Eddie Kramer Presented By Gibson from the company’s YouTube channel below:

Want the décor of your luxury recording studio to really fit your musical style? Say no to ugly acoustic panels with these decorative acoustic panels from GIK Acoustics. Here’s a look at 6 decorative acoustic panels for your luxury studio from their Impression Series and what each says about you:

1 – Gatsby Arches: These panels say that you rock so hard in the studio that even your practices feel like wild parties. When people see this, they’ll know there’s a method to your madness.

2 – Digiwave Vertical: These decorative acoustic panels say that you don’t care much for what people think of your music. Sure, you might not have an authentic sound, but that doesn’t matter, because to you make music for today, not for 40 years ago. (BTW, we at LUNO are hurt that an authentic sound is not for you…just kidding…do you!)

3 – Palomar: If you’re the person who likes to experiment and try anything, then these decorative acoustic panels are for you. You don’t give a damn if you mix country with electronica, or alternative rock with hip hop. Musically, you like to walk on the road less traveled, and sometimes go where no one has gone before.

4 – Braids: You believe your music is soulful and conscientious. These decorative acoustic panels say your music not only makes people move, it makes them think. When the revolution reaches it next level of intensity, your jams will be the soundtrack.

5 – 3D Cubes: These decorative acoustic panels say that you love your music to be complex and filled with intricacies. You love when people listen to one of your songs and only catch certain sounds on the third or fourth listen. Your music is like a puzzle, an enigma that is difficult to figure out at first impression, and that’s the way you like it.
