Mid-century modern record consoles have an elegance that could lead you to believe they materialized from a 1960’s James Bond movie. Like one of Bond’s gadgets, they also have some of the coolest hidden features that you may not have heard about. Unless you’re in the know, own one, or are among the community of Interior Designers, you may not know about some of the well kept secrets of these incredible decorative luxury furniture pieces. Here’s a quick list of some of the coolest mid-century modern record console features.

The Hidden Whiskey Bar

luno record console whiskey bar glasses

Let’s get started with a bang, easily our favorite feature of LUNO’s mid-century modern style record console, the discrete whiskey bar. It’s your own hidden turntable powered speakeasy, and comes with 4 beautiful gold rimmed whiskey glasses. It has the capacity to hold 4 full average sized whiskey or wine bottles, just in case you want to change it up. It really is the perfect complement to your favorite classic vinyl LP, check out the whiskey bar on one of our most popular consoles The EGB2.

Standard Marshall Salt & Pepper Grill Cloth

One of the coolest things to know about LUNO’s record consoles is that they come with the standard Marshall salt & pepper grill cloth, it doesn’t get more classic than that, Marshall amplifier grill cloth! You actually have one of the most iconic elements from the history of rock & roll music built in as part of the DNA of LUNO’s record consoles.

Apple & Airplay Compatibility

Apple Airplay Compatibility Record Console LUNO

Airplay compatibility means you can connect your other Apple compatible devices and stream them on your high quality LUNO stereo console, giving you an extremely full and rich audio experience. One of the comments people frequently make is how impressed they are by the enveloping sound that comes out of our consoles. Which actually gets at another feature that we didn’t have room to include, which is high quality audio components, that are hand-wired by our in-house audio gurus.

Deceptively Large Vinyl Storage Capacity

When you slide open the cabinet doors, you will see a perfectly measured space to store your copious vinyl collection. This baby holds 150 standard size vinyl records, and believe me you’re going to need after you hear one of these record consoles in person. Every record you currently own in any other format, you will begin a mad hunt to track it down in its original pure analog format.

Line-In Other Media & Audio Sources

The thing I love most is being able to connect other older analog tape players through the built-in amp and console speakers. It makes even these old tapes sound rich and warm, and the EQ controls it gives you, allow you to adjust for some of the deficiencies and decay that can be found as tapes age. Also, if you want to have the coolest looking home theater setup known to man, this unit can act as the core of your surround sound, and then some.

EGB2 RECORD CONSOLE

homepage3 - EGB2 Record Cabinet
LUNO’s flagship model, EGB2, is a timely update of the classic record consoles of the 50’s and 60’s. The beautiful Mid Century inspired design, boutique minimalist turntable, pull out MiniBar and custom gold rimmed whiskey glasses effectively evoke the luxurious style and modernist design of the Mad Men era. Each EGB2 is crafted by skilled artisans and craftsmen in Los Angeles, CA using American Walnut and would undoubtedly be a conversation piece based on it’s stylish design alone. The most exciting part is that there are 6 gorgeous finish options, and three speaker fabrics that you can choose from. What you see pictured is the classic Marshall amplifier salt and pepper grill cloth, in my mind it does not get any more classic and couldn’t fit the style of this beautiful piece more perfectly. Here are the full selection of finishes and fabrics for the EGB2:
EGB2 Record Cabinet Custom Options Guide Options
Cut from the same cloth as our flagship console, we are pleased to announce our newest console. The KC27 is a streamlined version of our EGB2, simplifying the components while still retaining many of the essential elements that make it’s big brother console such a spectacular piece. The KC27, like all LUNO products, is handcrafted and hand-wired in DTLA by skilled artisans and features a unique eye catching cross grain walnut pattern. The KC27 has a selection of beautiful finish and fabric options just like the EGB2, but with the KC27 you have some options for the mini-bar:
 • Storage For 2 Average Sized Liquor or Wine Bottles
 • Storage For 4 Cocktail Glasses – glasses not included

Don’t forget to check out the full options on the KC27 page:

The Shell Stereo Cabinet

Due to popular demand, LUNO is pleased to announce it’s latest design, “The Shell.”

Contrary to our fully equipped Mid Century inspired record consoles, The Shell is a streamlined stereo cabinet option featuring a simplistic modern design for those that want a hub to house their existing audio system.

The two large enclosures to each side can house your own speakers, under the left lid you can place your very own turntable, the right lid can house accessories or optionally, one of our LUNO faceplates connected to the same power amplifier found in our top of the line consoles.

Not only can you build out this incredible unit with whatever turntable or media device your heart desires, you can also select from a few additional options that allow you to make The Shell the custom record cabinet of your dreams:

 • 2 Door Options
 • 2 Leg Options
 • 2 Finish Options
If you’re a trendsetter that can’t be boxed into painting inside the lines, you can contact us here with your requests, in most cases if you can dream it, we’ll try our best to make that dream a reality.

Luxury design brand LUNO has teamed up with the Frank Zappa Estate on the creation of the SSKL Soundwave, FZ Limited Edition. This uniquely designed record console–only 10 of which will be available for purchase–is highlighted by a solid brass soundwave from Frank Zappa’s “Sofa No. 1” musical composition that is meticulously inlaid by hand and made flush with the walnut door.

The SSKL Soundwave, FZ Limited Edition also features a selection of vinyl recordings from Frank Zappa’s extensive recorded catalog, a minibar with Zappa whiskey glasses and space for four liquor bottles, storage for 150 records, a Groovewasher Kit, and a certificate of authenticity (signed, numbered, and dated). The console comes fully equipped with a Pro-Ject Esprit SB turntable, 2.1 speaker system, 100w subwoofer, 2 aux inputs and AirPlay so you can stream from any Apple device. The console design is the newest addition to LUNO’s luxury hifi console range. Featuring top of the line craftsmanship, the unit truly is a work of art.

Each SSKL Soundwave, FZ Limited Edition console is handcrafted and hand-wired in Los Angeles by experienced craftsmen and engineers. They are available by request only via LUNO’s website.

“We are big Zappa fans and when our paths crossed, we jumped at the opportunity to collaborate! We immediately went to the drawing board to present some ideas. After months of back and forth concepts, the idea of clipping a soundwave file from a song and applying it to the unit was born. We then spent another several months figuring out how to make that vision come to life. And while it looks effortless, complicated techniques were involved in making it happen. At LUNO, we pride ourselves on innovative designs and we’re extremely proud of the final result and are honored to have created this unit with the wonderful folks over at Zappa.” said Jennifer Farmer, co-Founder of LUNO.

“When I first came across LUNO’s record consoles, I immediately started drooling and knew I had to get my hands on one,” Ahmet Zappa says. “I telephonically stalked LUNO headquarters and was invited over for a visit to hear one of their consoles in all its glory. I was blown away. Thus began the dream of collaborating. Our goal was simple, let’s make something unique for Zappa fans and all true audiophiles everywhere. Jennifer and Dan were up for the challenge and amazing to work with. We love the end results and I’m very proud of our Zappa LUNO Console. At Zappa Records, we take the manufacturing of our vinyl very seriously and it’s equally important to have an exceptional record player on which to play it. We conduct extensive testing for quality audio control during production and this console–capable of making sweet, sweet audio love to your ears–is being used for just this purpose. From the wood finish, to the original speaker fabric (authentic Marshall Salt & Pepper Grill Cloth, the same one used on vintage Marshall amps), to the brass inlaid soundwave file from Frank’s ‘Sofa #1,’ it’s just what The Grand Wazoo would want for you.”

Metallica are launching a whiskey called Blackened that is formed by the band’s own music. Last year, Metallica’s guitarist, Kirk Hammett, brought us his own line of coffee, and this week the band unveiled a new line of Nixon watches. One couldn’t help but wonder what these master craftsmen of heavy metal would come up with next. Well, the short-lived Metallica tease is over. Now, they’re strengthening the bond with their fans with a premium whiskey.

They’re calling it Blackened American Whiskey, named after the opening song on their 1988 album, …And Justice for All. It’s only available in select stores in the U.S. this week, in a few cities on their upcoming American fall tour, and can be bought online. What makes Blackened different from all the other whiskeys on the market, other than being associated with Metallica?

“We are obviously not just slapping a Metallica label on a pre-existing mediocre whiskey,” said the band in a statement on their website.

For several years, Metallica collaborated with Dave Pickerell, a Master Distiller with a deep understanding of how sound can shape flavor. Through a sonic-enhancement process known as ‘Black Noise’, Metallica played a curated playlist of some of their heart-pounding music at the distillery, through a proprietary subwoofer engineered by Meyer Sound. By blasting the whiskey with their distinctive music, the low frequency sound waves disrupt and shape the whiskey in the wooden barrels on a molecular level. Not only does this process make the whiskey taste better, it gives it a unique Metallica taste.

Although many people know how to drink whiskey, and may even call themselves whiskey connoisseurs, what’s the best way to drink Blackened?

Knowing how music and whiskey are two things that people love, we at LUNO collaborated with the Frank Zappa Estate to design and build a limited edition record console. Handcrafted at a factory in Los Angeles, the SSKL Soundwave, Frank Zappa Limited Edition is just under six feet long and made of American Walnut, with a hand waxed finish. It is equipped with a turntable, a subwoofer, a speaker system, two auxiliary inputs, and can be used to stream music using AirPlay. On the doors of the record console is a solid brass sound wave, inlaid by hand and embedded into the walnut door. The sound wave comes from Frank Zappa, an artist that Rolling Stone listed as 22nd greatest guitarists of all time in their top 100 ranking, just 11 spots back of Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, who they listed at number 11.

Zappa’s unique sound wave of his “Sofa No.1” musical composition is not the only inspiration on this record console. There’s also a selection of vinyl recordings from his extensive recorded catalog, along with storage for 150 records. For the whiskey connoisseur, the record console also includes a minibar, with space for four liquor bottles, and some of Zappa’s personal whiskey glasses.

The best way to drink Blackened would be at the end of a long day of work, sitting on custom-built furniture, sipping out of a Zappa glass, and luxuriating in the moment while playing Metallica on the record console. Just sit there and indulge Blackened, forged by sound, as it comes alive within you, like a musical relaxant for your soul. While you feel the music in your stomach, listen to the authentic analog sounds pulsating from the SSKL Soundwave of two musical greats, as they immerse you in an unparalleled experience, within and without.

The SSKL Soundwave, Frank Zappa Limited Edition and this snug arm chair need an owner!

Keep this in mind: LUNO created only 10 SSKL Soundwave, Frank Zappa Limited Edition record consoles. Buy yours while you still can, before people figure out the buzz you get while drinking whiskey and listening to that precious sound.

Keep this in mind 2: Visit blackenedwhiskey.com to see which restaurants and bars near you are serving Blackened.

Designing a record console is only a keystroke, a phone call, or an email away. Whether you’re a person who is nostalgic for that heirloom look and classic sound, or you’re a luxury interior designer searching for the one piece of furniture that your client really wants to have, we at LUNO got you covered. We collaborate with you from the very beginning.

Today we’ll discuss the first part of process of designing a record console: DESIGN

1-Talk to us for free…on one condition: We’re not lawyers who will charge you hundreds of dollars just for a chat. You can tell us what you want, what you need, and the style you’re looking for. If you have images of items that you saw online or in a magazine, share them with us. We have our own collection of inspirational examples that we can also share with you. Don’t forget to share your musical style and tastes, because you are after all designing a record console. If you can tell us your vision in less than 30 minutes, the initial consultation is free. What’s the condition? If your initial consultation takes longer than 30 minutes, then we have to charge you like lawyers. Think of it as a retainer that will go towards the final purchase price of your design.

2 – Things don’t stay sketchy for long: After we take all of your ideas, inspirations, and information from the initial consultation, we quickly move to the next step. We take the sketches from the consultation and turn them into detailed drawings and renderings. The detailed drawings help us handcraft your piece right in Los Angeles, and give you an idea of the craftsmanship involved in making it. The renderings give you an idea of what the final product will look like, and even how it may look in your space. We may show you multiple options for your approval. But if you don’t want any drawings nor renderings, you don’t need to buy them.

3 – We yearn for your validation: Once you approve the option that you want, we will present you with a more substantial proposal and a more accurate estimation of the cost of your custom piece. At this point, you’re halfway on your journey to designing a record console, so a deposit of 50% is required.

]]>
Designing a record console is a really fun experience, because you can express your sense of style and love for music, all in one product of LUNO custom furniture. In Part 1, we looked at design, but today we’ll discuss the second part of the process of designing a record console: FABRICATION

1-With the drawings approved, now we can start to build: Our production and finishing departments review the drawings that you approve, as well as any finish samples that you want. You know the expression measure twice, cut once? Well, at this stage we are doing just that: estimating your project so that we can order the right materials for production.

2 – Lights, cameras, PRODUCTION: Well, lights yes, cameras no, but loads of production. Here is where the factory takes your drawings, which are 2D representations of what you want, and start to build it. First, we build the largest part of the record console, the cabinets. Then the finishes that you selected are added to the cabinets. Finally, the cabinet with the applied finishes is sent to our audio department to be wired. It’s no longer an empty cabinet, but a record console that you designed.

3 – We yearn for your validation again….sorry, we can’t help it: Once your record cabinet is complete, we send you photos and videos for you to approve while it is still in the factory. After the approvals, we do an in-depth inspection of the record console to make sure that everything is on point. Then we release your record console to a white glove delivery service of your choosing. Oh, it’s always sad to see them go, but such is life, you want your record console right?

But you know what is the best part of our fabrication process? It’s all done at the same factory in L.A., by highly skilled craftspeople and sound engineers. No subcontracting, no sending pieces all over the country or the world, then sent back to us months later so that we can ship it to you. Nope, LUNO is a one-stop shop. You tell us what you want, it gets designed with your input, we build it, and then we deliver it to you through an insured third party.

Designing a record console for yourself that has your personality is really exciting, because you’re doing something exclusive that most people don’t get to do. Just think of the conversations that you can start at a dinner party by letting your guests know that you helped LUNO to design the handcrafted piece of luxury furniture. Yeah, that’s impressive, you would be proud in that moment, and you should be!

In Part 1, we looked at design.

In Part 2, we looked at fabrication.

Finally in Part 3, we’ll look at: DELIVERY.

1 – How do you want it shipped?: LUNO deals with many white glove delivery services, but remember that prices depend on your location. From our factory near Downtown LA, we ship to anywhere in the United States or Canada. We can’t determine the shipping price nor the delivery time, so keep that in mind. We recommend the best white glove delivery options for your luxury piece. Your order is properly blanket wrapped, secured, crated, and fully insured. Also, we recommend making delivery arrangement within 14 days of completion of your order. We’ll notify you when it’s done, so that we have time to decide on a shipping arrangement.

2 – Consider storage options if you need to: If you’re moving into a new penthouse soon or will be away on business, you probably won’t be home to accept your order, right? Once your order is complete, the reason that we recommend making delivery arrangement within 14 days is because after that deadline we typically charge customers a storage fee. Since we don’t have unlimited room to store a lot of undelivered orders in our factory, we’ll have to find someplace secure to store your order until you are ready to have it delivered. If for whatever reason, you feel that you won’t be able to accept your order within the two-week period after it is completed, we recommend that storage of your order be arranged until a delivery time is convenient.

3 – Before you start playing that funky music right, do an inspection: Once your record console gets delivered, we know that you’ll be anxious to start playing some records. But before the fun begins, inspect your order. During transit, things might have shifted, so look closely for any damage. Since you helped design your order, this should be easier than you think. Please, if you see any defects, contact us immediately, and we will resolve the issue. If you accept the record console without inspecting it and you find out later that there is damage, LUNO cannot be held liable.

LUNO makes high end record consoles, stereo consoles, and related audio accessories for the discerning analog audiophile. Our handmade products are built by craftspeople who have perfected the art of creating luxury furniture, as well as sound engineers who know their stuff. We hope that the customization process for designing a record console with LUNO is much clearer for you, and that most of your questions have been answered.

In a digital world, your love for the modern record player console is an exclusive preference. But what would you say to your best friend who was on the fence about investing in one? How would you convince them to see the high-end finishes and pure analog sound as more than luxury furniture, but part of a lifestyle choice? Now that it is possible to get bespoke HiFi products, people want them, but there are others who aren’t sure.

Here are 6 reasons why a modern record player console is worth it:

1 – It’s classic

Today’s world is hectic and out of control at times. If you’re nostalgic about the so-called simpler times, we understand. If you feel like nothing is as good as it used to be, you probably miss the old days. You miss when music meant something special and you related to it. With a modern record player console, it’s like having a classic piece of the past as part of your home décor.

2 – The craftsmanship is excellent

At the LUNO factory in L.A., our craftsmen are hard at work handmaking these high-end modern record player consoles. We mix analog sound with digital technology to create luxury furniture for audiophiles. Some of our modern record player consoles have a natural lacquered walnut finish, with a Marshall bluesbreaker grill cloth. Sure, you could find a vintage record console online and get a local HiFi dude to upgrade it, but you’ll be making a bad investment. The sound will be nowhere close to being as good as those our professional sound engineers can integrate into our record consoles.

3 – It’s a conversation starter

When people come to your house and see your modern record player console it’s impressive. It’s an eye-catching statement piece, like abstract art that people can’t help but look at. Some will say that they haven’t seen one of those in years. Others will ask if you have found a vintage unit and got in refurbished. Imagine their reaction when you tell them that it was recently handcrafted in L.A.? And if you have the right records around, you’ll have something to engage your guests and keep them entertained.

4 – Contemporary built means contemporary fixes

If you buy a vintage record console player and get a HiFi specialist to update it, you’ll forever have to find a specialist to repair it or find parts in case things break. Finding parts for some of those vintage units can be very tough and time consuming. With LUNO, we build our record consoles so that they can be repaired with contemporary fixes. We don’t have to search for somebody’s grandfather who knows how to repair them, because we handmade them using our design. That means you don’t have to follow poorly made DIY videos on YouTube trying out old fixes. When you buy a modern record player console from LUNO, you get access to contemporary fixes that you can trust. This will save you money and headaches in the long-run.

5 – It’s modern

As classic as a modern record player console is, it is undeniably modern. The beauty of the design feeds that sense of nostalgia, while still being a piece of modern high-end furniture that an upscale customer will want to buy. That’s why we spend so much time making sure that we assemble a product that is of the utmost quality. Like the remake of your favorite TV show from decades past, our modern record player consoles give a nod to the past while telling a very contemporary story of luxury furniture with style in the 21st century.

6 – It shows your status

Like buying a Maserati or a Porsche, a modern record player console in your home is an obvious status symbol. Its presence shows that you appreciate the finer things in life, and that you’re knowledgeable about exclusive luxury products. It’s something that you’ll have that others do not.

Thought record consoles were dead? Nope, they never died. In fact, we at LUNO are one of the few companies in the world that make modern record consoles, and people love them.

Thought typewriters were dead? Well they might have been for a while, but they’re back now in the form of modern typewriters.

Companies such as Vinpok and KnewKey, that specialize in creative 3C accessories (computer, communication, and consumer electronics) for iPhones and MacBooks, make retro dual mode mechanical keyboard that have a classic look. They are inspired by the vintage design of typewriters, and gives creatives, particularly writers, the thrill of using an analog writing tool. It provides a retro writing experience that does not compare to using a laptop or the keyboard of a desktop computer. Theses battery powered modern typewriters can work for 50 hours on a single charge. Both Windows and Mac OS operating systems are supported by these modern typewriters, can connect to your phone via Bluetooth, and connect to your laptop via a USB cord. There is a clip stand where paper would be inserted to receive a tablet or smartphone, and dynamic backlit keys (with 5 levels of brightness) that make small clicking sounds to give you that working on an old typewriter feel. There’s even a scroll knob, not for paper of course, but to adjust your clipped-in device. The carriage return bar is used to switch between USB and Bluetooth modes.

Unlike the typewriters of old that were very heavy because of their printing mechanisms, these modern typewriters are lightweight and portable. You can easily move them around the room, and take them with you on the go, just like a laptop or a tablet.

We love seeing how the desire for analog products like vinyl albums and record consoles also exists with writing tools.
