This list is going to ruin someone’s day. One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure, or so they say. But some piles of garbage are so massive, and so offensive, that they become billowing dumpster fires, and that’s what we’re looking at here. The insanity of this list is that some of these records did not get released originally on vinyl, and someone at a major label sat around and thought that we were sorely lacking in albums that will someday be used as psychological torture in hostage situations, and the agony should be delivered in full and pristine analog quality. The offenses of these artists are nothing short of sonic crimes against humanity, but this is by no means an exhaustive list of the worst, this is an extemporaneous list, that represents albums that made our team have a palpable cringe reflex. Please enjoy our first 5 picks for albums that should have never been released on vinyl, in no particular order:

30 Seconds To Mars – America

There’s nothing like the corporate world selling political ideas back to the people with a hollywood actor’s vanity project, that could maybe be the worst band ever to have charting singles. How the 30 Seconds To Mars train doesn’t derail itself after a decade plus of horrifying productivity is one of the last great mysteries. Pure nausea condensed into song form, filtered through vocoded trap vocals, with millennial whooping and lyrics that even Imagine Dragons would have left on the drawing board. My only wish in this life is for Jared Leto to get to hear his overproduced abominations through my ears. He should have quit while he was ahead with Frozen Embryos.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Stadium Arcadium

worst albums that should have never been released on vinyl

“Dani California” should be the only words I need to use to describe the horror in store for those bold enough to unwrap this record from its plastic. If that doesn’t frighten you away, I will add “Snow (Hey Oh)” as damning evidence of the least effort ever put into a top 20 hit. Their history of musical crimes is long, and it spits in the face of very very few redeeming moments. But this album is the case of having 20 years plus of continually favoring their worst qualities, and constantly refining what makes your music annoying and churning out constant gut punches for fans who believed they had a few good songs sometime in the early 90s. When we wake up from the nightmare that has been the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the album that will have us screaming in a cold sweat will be Stadium Arcadium.

The Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D.

As Satan welcomes you into hell you can hear some of the biggest hits of both Fergie and The Black Eyed Peas playing in the background. They do fortunately let you choose which song from this album will be played during your descent into madness.

Katy Perry – Witness

It’s hard to believe that someone would go to such great lengths to make Taylor Swift look like the John Lennon of our time. I have not had the displeasure of hearing this on vinyl, but the only format this should have been released on is self-deleting MP3 that automatically drag themselves to your garbage. Her constant illuminati symbology and odd sense of humor that doesn’t always lead to distinguishable jokes has finally reached full maturity on this record. I would say she’s past her prime, but unfortunately it looks like this album is the ultimate distillation of whatever it is that she does. If you have any questions about the assertions made in this review, please click here.

Hoobastank – Self Titled

If you had ever hoped for an infinitely less talented version of Incubus, fortune smiled upon you in the early 2000s. A band that was so benign, pointless and unnecessary that it makes you nostalgic for the edginess of the dad from Gossip Girl’s fake television band. I honestly am not sure if this band ever enjoyed writing our playing these songs, which is the correct emotional response to tracks like “The Reason” and the endless garbage that comprise the rest of the indistinguishable tracks of this album. Songs that seem to freeze time, and stretch it into eternity, which makes sense they are warning you with the infinity sign in their logo.

Call it dad rock, smooth jazz, easy listening, adult contemporary, lite rock or by its most famous and current label yacht rock, it is one of the most divisive genres of music in the history of popular music recordings. You can hear it in elevators, at your dentist office, at the grocery store or anywhere a pleasant and mostly upbeat tune is needed to keep a mellow vibe in public spaces. Because of this many have begun to associate these artists with dental surgery and other mundane scenarios that we’re forced to wait in varying levels of distress, for uncomfortably long periods of time. These artists and their selected albums however are some of the most complex expressions of pop music from the last century, featuring some of the greatest musicianship and melodies ever to be cut to a vinyl record. This however is not up for debate, like it or not, these are:

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER THE BEST YACHT ROCK VINYL RECORDS EVER MADE

STEELY DAN – AJA

One of the funkiest albums ever recorded that you could also fall asleep to. This apple falls closer to the smooth jazz tree, but these ice cold jams will treat you real nice when when you’re out for a dinner with that special lady at the Bonaventure hotel, or taking an ocean drive in your metallic blue Lamborghini Countach, coked out of your mind. There are a lot of great Steely Dan records, once you fall down the SD rabbit hole, most fans never resurface and become raving evangelists of this incredible band.

ROXY MUSIC – AVALON

roxy music avalon yacht rock

Many would want to strangle me for including this on a yacht rock list, but it ticks all of the boxes of our nautical genre. Not only is this album front to back flawless, it blends the sophisticated synth sound that brought Roxy Music into the 1980s. From its timeless classic “More Than This” to the etherial fantasy of “True To Life,” this album has some of the best studio recordings translated to vinyl I have ever heard.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS – MINUTE BY MINUTE

All I have to say about this one is four grammys, count ’em 1, 2, 3, 4.  If that’s not enough for you, my secondary evidence is “What A Fool Believes.” Michael McDonald has one of the most distinctive and beautiful male voices of the 70s and 80s, he went on to achieve some of the greatest achievements of the Yacht Rock genre, this entire post could be dedicated to this somewhat under appreciated genius.

MIAMI SOUND MACHINE – PRIMITIVE LOVE

This album has almost all of the tracks that you love but may not know are performed by Miami Sound Machine. This album is a monster, I call this record soft proto-freestyle, but where it gained popularity was in the safe spaces that smooth jazz and adult contemporary provided during 1985. Gloria Estefan absolutely kills it on “Bad Boys,” “Conga,” and “Falling In love (Uh-Oh),” how did albums in the 80s each contain an endless amount singles?

DOUBLE – BLUE

A song that was un-escapeable between the years of 1986 and 1989, “Captain Of Her Heart,” was soothing yet haunting, and as beautiful and reassuring as the yacht itself. What many did not appreciate at the time, mostly because they were a one hit wonder in the US, was how great Kurt Maloo’s voice came across on every single track of their magnum opus Blue. This record could be the dictionary definition of what smooth jazz is, and defined the mellow sound of the elegant 80s, so much so that you’d swear this album was recorded on a yacht.

HALL & OATES – H2O

You can’t have this list without Hall & Oates, and it’s an extremely difficult decision as to which of their albums most deserves to be on this list. This one edges out Private Eyes primarily for how incredible this vinyl record sounds, and the diamond pristine production that went into making this one of the most iconic albums of the 1980s.

STEVE WINWOOD – BACK IN THE HIGHLIFE

Winwood has been a part of so many great music projects, but it’s hard to see any resemblance between the LSD traveler who sang “Dear Mr. Fantasy” with Traffic in the 60s reflected at all in the peak of his commercial success, Back In The Highlife. If you don’t think you know Winwood, you most probably do, his songs “Higher Love” and “The Finer Things” still haunt waiting rooms until this very day.

CHRISTOPHER CROSS – CHRISTOPHER CROSS

The only thing more impressive than McDonald’s 4 grammys with The Doobie Brothers, are the 5 that Christopher Cross won for his extremely impressive debut, that many refer to as the blueprint for yacht rock, referring to his timelessly smooth classic “Sailing.” His voice is as clear and beautiful as a horn, clearly an angel walking among us.

FLEETWOOD MAC – TANGO IN THE NIGHT

If you thought you couldn’t make Fleetwood Mac into an 80s band, think again. Lindsay Buckingham lead this incredible band into some of the most complex productions, and vocal arrangements of their career. This album is so smooth, there are literally almost no words to describe it. Every convention that 1980s production came to be known for is distilled here into one record. If you need to put on something to come down from listening to all of Christopher Cross from front to back, this could be one of the few records worthy of that challenge.

Please make sure that you listen to these albums responsibly on a quality hifi stereo record console.

It’s not a very well kept secret that LUNO makes beautiful luxury furniture, but what separates LUNO from our competition is that we’re a one stop vinyl listening room shop for those who are looking to create a stylish and immersive entirely analog vinyl listening experience, with all of the bells and whistles, even a few surprises thrown in there for good measure. To create the complete listening room set, it requires putting together quite a few pieces, that you may or may not be able to find in the luxury furniture space, and if you can find non-vintage pieces, locating pieces that give you the cohesive style that our sets provide can be a struggle. Each piece we design is engineered for the ultimate listening experience, from the demanding standards we have for our audience components to the details that only those who deeply understand both the technical audio and designer furniture spaces would think of and integrate into their offerings. If there’s anything that we’re experts in is diving head first into our favorite vinyl records, and understanding the ultimate listening environment all the way down to the perfect chair, and believe me even that piece has a deep and intricate thought process behind its design. Better than trying to explain let us show you what we mean with a sample vinyl listening room suite setup below.

“One Stop Vinyl Listening Room Shop”

The first piece you need, and the centerpiece of any vinyl listening room is the hifi record console. This is the meat and the potatoes, it determines a number of factors beyond just the style, but it’s crucial to understand how the quality is going to effect the over all immersion into the listening experience. So for our purposes of creating the ultimate luxury listening room, we’ll start off using our flagship the EGB2 as the example.

homepage3 - EGB2 Record Cabinet

So please note that some of the coolest features can’t be see at first glance. Not only does this sonic powerhouse have storage for 150 vinyl records built-in, but it also has one of the coolest features you’ll ever find in any hifi record console, a built-in discrete whiskey bar! Talk about taking the listening experience to the next level. We also include 4 gold-rimmed whiskey glasses, a bottle of one of our favorite whiskeys, and a selection of personally curated classic vinyl records that we know you’re going to love to put this console through its paces.

We can complement this gorgeous luxury console perfectly with our Buckley Listening Chair. The style and comfort are unmatched, once you enter its comfort zone, you will never want to get up. But, here’s where we’ve optimized it for the ultimate listening experience, the chair is set to the perfect height to optimize the range of our record console’s sweet spot, so you can achieve THE SOUND!

Next up, decorate vinyl storage units, that not only look good, but are on par with the quality and luxury or the rest of your listening suite are essential, not that there’s anything wrong with it, but you don’t want to go IKEA on this element, because it can be such a beautiful decorative opportunity and personality piece that ties everything in together. For this vinyl listening room we suggest our JAX Vinyl Storage Unit, made with beautiful exotic zebrawood, available in some gorgeous finishes.

If you have less space or you’re looking for a way to display a curated set of records at time time for guests to flip through, and see what incredible taste in music you have, we offer our Flip Tabletop Vinyl Storage unit. Not only is it one of the most functional and style pieces we’ve come across, but it gives you a way to showcase 35 of your favorite albums, and rotate collections for theme and mood of your gatherings when you entertain.

Vinyl Storage - Flip Tabletop Record Storage Unit

Last but not least, you need to clean and maintain this precision piece of audio equipment, and considering our custom Groovewasher kit not only matches the incredible style of your vinyl listening room, it gives you the best set of tools to ensure your records sound great, but will give you the greatest possible life from your investment.

The post Worst Vinyl Album Record Cover Fails From Popular Artists | LUNO appeared first on Luno.

It’s really easy to make a list of the worst vinyl album record cover fails of all time, a little too easy. There are endless albums released by artists that have had no success, that somehow mysteriously were pressed to vinyl, I’m guessing without anyone’s knowledge of approval, considering how horrifying some of these covers are. Artists who crawl out of some subterranean nightmare where the standard for an image that represents your music is whatever makes you cringe so hard that it almost rips a hole in the fabric of this dimension. Like I was saying, finding nausea inducing album art is like shooting fish in a barrel, it would actually be impossible to create a general list of the worst album covers of all time, because just when you think you’ve found the worst, you discover there is another rabbit hole with an another infinite amount of even more abysmal covers than the last set that had almost ruined your year. So we have to set up a few parameters, the albums have to contain something that approximates music. The artists had to have at least had some type of success in the business, because clearly there’s no quality control when you’ve either pressed the album yourself, or a micro-label from Belgium released 100 copies for some extreme sub-genre. What makes an album cover fail epic, is when record labels had to look at something that makes you question whether you want to just take the album and put it instantly in the trash or set it aflame and return it to earth. Keep in mind teams of executives, PR people and their respective marketing departments all had to lay eyes on these covers, and decide these images would not be career ending but actually, no, quite the opposite, they could actually promote and sell these albums.

  1. Fleetwood Mac – Mystery To Me

2. Pantera – Metal Magic

3. Jim Post – I Love My Life

4. Hot Tuna – Final Vinyl

5. Bros – Chocolate Box

6. Cerrone – Cerrone’s Paradise

7. ManOWar – Anthology

8. Bee Gees – Life In A Tin Can

9. Gary – Getting Down To Business

We continue the Frank Zappa celebration this week by revisiting one of the all time greatest classic rock records, and the album that contains the track that inspired our new SSKL Zappa collaboration record console with the Frank Zappa Estate. For those who may be wondering, the sound waveform used in our design is actually taken from one of the most beloved tracks from One Size Fits All “Sofa no. 1.” Considering how rich and eclectic Frank’s catalog of music is, it’s hard to focus on just one record, rather than just gush about our love for this incredible musician, so we’ll be doing a little of both here.

One Size Fits All is a groundbreaking work that defies expectations, defines new boundaries and just as quickly obliterates them and builds something entirely new. The album contains some of the most beautiful, inventive, intense, playful and liberating music I can think of. Many have attempted to try to reduce what Zappa does here to a formula and replicate it, but none have ever been nearly as successful in achieving the sense of pure freedom unselfconscious exploration of ideas that transcend description. This album should almost be likened to space exploration, but yet for all of its experimentation this record is so immediate and accessible that it again defies almost all other records that you could compare it to that came before it or followed in its influence.

This is rock unlike you’ve ever heard, jazz unlike you’ve ever heard and something else that really has no name, and probably for very good reason can’t be named. Tracks like “Po-jama people” that capture a proto-funk vibe with some of the most incredible and tasteful, face-meting riffs that I have ever heard captured on record. Zappa and The Mothers of Invention were so tapped in and synched up in their playing on One Size Fits All that its almost unreal, the musical ideas explored here are nothing short of a breathtaking work of masters of their craft.

If you haven’t had a chance yet, make sure you check out not only our new SSKL Zappa record console but also the incredible Soundwave Listening Chairs that we debuted yesterday. We’re so excited to have  had the opportunity to collaborate with the Frank Zappa Estate on this incredible project.

In the immortal words of H-Town, “Somebody’s rocking’ knockin’ the boots.” Musically Houston, Texas has been “knocking’ the boots” for decades now, producing some of the most popular artists from the top 40, ranging wildly in styles, including  Beyonce Knowles, Kenny Rogers, ZZ Top, Paul Wall, Clint Black, Hillary Duff and many many more. None of these artists have the spotlight aimed on them so brightly in this moment as Travis Scott, who has taken the world of hip-hop by storm over the last few years. His latest, Astroworld is helping him to transcend the world of hip-hop and crossover into the mainstream world of popular culture, with a little help from his very famous spouse. Few artists have received the massive welcome he has at the Coachella music festival, for a non-headliner, he upstaged most of the big names performing at the 2017 iteration of the festival.

This new album, Astroworld has brought new dimension to Scott’s catalog, and a deeper exploration of concepts that have both biographical and esoteric significance to Mr. Scott. The album’s title is taken from a classic feature of the Houston, TX landscape, now long defunct and having descended into ruins. The title of this album gives us a peek into what must have been one of the centerpieces of his early years growing up in Houston. Sonically we’re seeing some of the most fully realized arrangements, and some of the most engaging and immediate soundscapes in one of Scott’s productions. The Astroworld title is extremely fitting on album opener “Stargazing” providing an almost etherial backdrop to lyrics that set the tone of the journey of this record. The references to psychedelics lend themselves well to the world he has created within the frame of his imagination.

This album is one of Travis Scott’s most fully realized, both lyrically and creating an experience that sustains the length of a full LP. I think Astroworld will split the core of his fanbase, but will win over new converts to the Travis Scott sound, the album is already generating buzz from musical spheres outside of those previously initiated. If you are already a fan then this record is a no-brainer to purchase immediately on vinyl, the only format that matters.

The personal album collections and record player consoles of celebrities can be valued in the thousands of dollars. Every celebrity had a unique way of experiencing vinyl music. They partied with vinyl while drinking whiskey, they listened to vinyl in solitude (sometimes with whiskey and more), and some were involved in the making of records themselves.

Here are 5 legendary celebrities with their vinyl records:

1 – Clint Eastwood

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

For decades, this man of men was frequently portrayed as a gun-toting American hero. As a kid, he liked listening to early 20th century jazz musicians. His mother had a large collection of jazz records in their Oakland, California home, and his love for the music genre stayed with him over the course of his life. Most people know him as an actor, but before he became one of Hollywood’s elite, he was a semi-professional jazz pianist.

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

2 – Muhammad Ali

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

The Greatest of All-Time boxing and cultural superhero had a record player installed in his 1960 Cadillac. At the time, it was an exclusive luxury feature available to only a wealthy few. What made these in-car record players so desirable was that the user got to choose whatever they wanted to listen to. Something to watch out for the next time you’re at a vintage car auction.

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

3 – Frank Sinatra

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

One of the most influential musical artists of the 20th century, Frank Sinatra loved to entertain his celebrity friends at his Twin Palms estate in Palm Springs, California. Sinatra had a flag pole on his property where he would raise a Jack Daniels flag as a signal to his celebrity neighbors that party time had arrived. Despite all the partying that went on, the house still stands. It is a 4,500 square-foot, four-bedroom, seven-bathroom, mid-century modern house, that you can tour and live in as a short-term rental. The house still has the original recording system console with a small collection of Sinatra’s personal albums.

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

4 – Marlon Brando

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

This two-time Academy Award winner loved Miles Davis’ album, Sketches of Spain. He once said, “If you want to understand me, listen to that recording.” His personal vinyl collection has even inspired a playlist on Spotify.

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

5 – Andy Warhol

Legendary Celebrities and Their Vinyl Records

Not only did this great America pop artist listen to vinyl records, he also designed over 100 album covers. From The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers and Love You Live, to Aretha Franklin’s Aretha, and John Lennon’s Menlove Ave, Warhol left his pop art mark on pop music.

W Hotels is expanding their connection to the music industry with their very own label called W Records. Over the next year, four emerging artists will record albums and W Records will help them developed into stars.

W Records is another tool that the luxury hotel brand is using to attract clients. Beyond having a library of vinyl records for guests to choose from, W Hotels are taking their knowledge of music and supporting the careers of artists. They plan on helping artists record, mix, master, produce videos, and even with distribution. The music from this new label will be produced at W Sound Suites, the hotel’s recording studios located in Los Angeles, Seattle, Barcelona, and Bali. Along with digital albums, W Records will produce 500 limited-edition vinyl copies of exclusive tracks. Each artist will have the chance to perform at the hotel brand’s W Wake Up Call music festivals. What this means for these emerging artists is exposure to the 110 million members of Marriott, the W Hotel’s parent company.

As Anthony Ingham, the Global Brand Leader for W Hotels Worldwide, said in a press release in April of 2017, “The W brand has long been synonymous with music, from the live music programming in our buzzing Living Rooms to musicians choosing to stay with us while on tour.  The W Sound Suite provides the perfect professional environment for when inspiration strikes – any time, day or night, complemented by 24 hour room service, of course!”

W Hotels are doing two things: They are creating another point of contact between the brand and their members by using an existing affinity for music. This deepens the relationship between the brand and their guests, making the bond stronger. W are also strengthening their relationship to the music industry, by becoming part of it in a big way. Currently, they have music directors who are great at finding new and innovative music to play in their hotels. But with W Records, they will not only find new artists, but help emerging artists get their start. None of this is new for W Hotels, who have created an ecosystem of verticals for their global community of design savvy individuals. This new holistic approach is what these emerging artists will benefit from.

“W Records is, undoubtedly, a natural next step for W and music. It represents a complete 360-degree approach to our innovative music programming – one in which we support emerging talent, provide them a place to record, distribute their music and act as a live venue. We’ve accomplished each of these tasks in increments before, but now we can do it all.”

The first artist that W Records is launching is Amber Mark, an R&B singer whose first two tracks will be available on 500 limited-edition vinyl copies. Check out some of the photos below of the W Sound Suites in Bali and Seattle, as well as the launch of W Records earlier this month in New York when Amber Mark performed.

A Rare Pink Floyd 1969 album that was used for radio promotion in Japan was sold in August 2018 for $13,953 US. A band as popular as Pink Floyd didn’t really need to promote, so there were only a small amount of promotional records released to radio stations. The promo records of Ummagumma, Pink Floyd’s fourth album, are rare, and having one in excellent condition is special. The red vinyl of the record is also rare. All of this made the rare Pink Floyd album worthy of a large price tag. Along with the vinyl, there’s a 4-page insert with lyrics in English and promotional information in Japanese.

This rare Pink Floyd red promo record was sold on Discogs, the growing crowdsourced website of vinyl records. Just last month, they launched Discogs Exclusives, a marketplace for rare and limited edition vinyl releases. You’ll be able to purchase promotional albums, test-pressings, albums with rare artwork on their sleeve, out-of-print stock, and other one-of-a-kind records. These are the sort of items that may have been stored in a warehouse decades ago, or were kept in the houses of music executives without many people knowing. Sometimes people pass away and pass on personal items to their descendants who are unaware of what they have. When rare albums like that surface, their value can be really high.

In 2018, the only other album sale on Discogs that was higher than the Ummagumma promo, was Prince’s The Black Album, which sold for $27,500 US. The rare 1987 LP is the most expensive record sold on Discogs to date. The album was one of 500,000 copies that Prince wanted to be destroyed back in the late 80s because he felt that it was too angry of a record and didn’t want it to be released.

Vinyl record sales for 2018 continued their increase for the 13th consecutive year. Even though there is still a little over a month until the end of the year, 2018 has already been impressive, and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) plans to make 2019 even better. How? The RIAA plans to officially release updated manufacturing specs for vinyl, for the first time since 1978.

The process began in early October at Making Vinyl, a B2B conference that’s only two years old dedicated to advancing the vinyl manufacturing process. Since vinyl has made a comeback in popularity, the RIAA and Making Vinyl are collaborating to update existing standards in order to help increase vinyl sales. This should modernize the manufacturing of records so that more can be sold to meet demand, with a higher quality, and better consumer experience. Hey, if this means that more of you will be buying record consoles from us next year, then that is nothing less than awesome!

Even if you took the first six months of 2018, vinyl record sales from January to June increased 13% compared to 2017. Despite claims that vinyl sales are down because Best Buy sales have slowed, more people have been buying vinyl year after year. It is normal for sales at a big box retailer to slide since they do not have the wide selection of albums that independent record stores or a website like Discogs have. Using sales at Best Buy as any indicator for the wider vinyl market leads to inaccurate conclusions and misleading headlines. As we’ve shown you before, certain records can be worth quite a lot. This why Discogs still believe that vinyl is a great investment.
