The Grundig SO 191/60 Stereo Console was manufactured in 1959 and 1960 by Grundig USA, a subsidiary of the Grundig Radio Distribution company based in West Germany. Grundig was started by Max Grundig, an ingenious entrepreneur who as a young boy in the 1920s had a passion for radio technology. He got his start in the analog audio technology business selling radios in the few years leading up to World War II.

Immediately after the war, instead of selling other companies’ radios, he wanted to make his own. He opened a radio production facility that manufactured “build-your-own” radio kits for Germans to use at home, but that was only the beginning of his foray into making personal entertainment products for the average consumer. As a result of Grundig’s understanding of where the market was going, the company became quite successful in the late 1950s and beyond. At the time, Grundig was the largest radio factory in Europe, and the largest tape recorder and radiogram factory in the world. Grundig was an influential radio, record console, and television manufacturer, but over the years the company has transformed into an all-round home appliance maker.

The Grundig SO 191/60 Stereo Console is part of that long legacy of bringing powerfully engineered products with fine finishes into the home for people to enjoy. Like many vintage stereo consoles of the period, there are still a few around in various working conditions. It’s nice to know such icons of analog audio technology remain. The stereo console has a super-heterodyne receiver, nine AM circuits, 14 FM circuits, and has broadcast, longwave, shortwave plus and UHF wave bands. It comes equipped with six loudspeakers, a stereo amplifier module, and an alternating current supply of 110, 125, and 220 volts. It’s all contained within a wooden case with a high gloss finish. The console measures 57.5 long x 33.5 deep x 16.1 high inch. It stands on four wooden legs with brass feet, above which is a horizontal grille cloth. The tuner section pulls out from the middle.
